I didn't know how spoiled I was in Durham, NC!

So far the most dramatic difference between living there and here in Portland, ME, has been the slow Amazon deliveries. I was so used to receiving packages the next day, sometimes even the same day, that waiting 5 to 7 days for deliveries here in Portland seems... Barbaric!

On the plus side, this will train me to be less dependent on Amazon. It's not like they need my money anyway.

Yeah - I don't know what I'd do - esp when I need something tech related - lol - I guess the old fashioned driving around until I find it.

@tazz602 ugh, I foresee lots of trips to BestBuy in my future ☹️

@borghal Whaat? I didn’t even know same or next day delivery was a thing! Welcome to Maine. Add an extra two days delivery time shipping to the northern part of the state.

@borghal
I'd definitely be missing Fry's Electronics then - too bad it didn't survive - you could find anything there.

@Rockbythetree let's pretend we both didn't know that it was a thing, and let's enjoy our slow Maine deliveries 🤣

ChelsieSp

@borghal hahahaha yes! Two weeks is perfectly reasonable for deliveries? Makes you stop and think about what you really want and need and if you could instead shop locally.

Borghal :verified_gay:

@Rockbythetree this was exactly my thinking. No more impulse buys! Or at least, more time for buyer's remorse and cancelling orders! And yes to helping local economies!

I'm actually kinda excited about it, as evidenced by my excessive use of exclamation marks!

@borghal the postal service in Maine usually delivers for Amazon and they’re severely understaffed in most of the state. Our rural P.O. gets overwhelmed on a regular basis , and seeing an “out for delivery” status for three days is normal.
It’s just a #Maine thing. Pour a Moxie with a splash of coffee brandy , put your feet up , glob around some, cuz t’aint pooched it’ll show in time.

@borghal Delivery was reliably 2-day with Prime before COVID. But now...yeah, it's typically about a week. I don't think there is a compelling reason for me to renew this year.

@borghal it will encourage you to buy local. When I moved to SF I spend my first month only buying local. It was a great way to explore the city. Also, it's great to have a place to go get what you need the same day.

@borghal I've been doing my best to cut Amazon out of my life. Saving $150 a year by canceling Prime has been great. I find a lot of my tech stuff at Best Buy, and they should show if it's available to pick up locally.

I am lucky that even if I do have to stray over to Amazon for something, even the free shipping arrives quick since we have a massive distribution center nearby.

@borghal Yeah when looking at living in Portugal it's even worse. No Amazon at all! The closest you get is delivery to Spain and then getting it shipped over. At least that is the status of things when we looked into it a little while ago.

@borghal The problem in Maine is that there are so many products that you just can't find locally. So you have to depend on mail shopping a lot of the time. After a while you don't mind the wait because otherwise you just have to do without.
